The African Women in Dialogue (AfWID) is hosting a transformative five-day conference in Johannesburg from January 27 to 31, 2025, under the theme “Women’s Voice and Power as Agents of Change.” This significant event has gathered approximately 1,000 women from 55 African countries, including government officials, entrepreneurs, students, public servants, and activists.
The conference aims to amplify women’s voices across the continent and foster dialogue and collaboration among women leaders and advocates.
Riah Phiyega, CEO of the Women’s Development Business Trust (WDB Trust), emphasized the conference’s commitment to inclusivity, highlighting that 60% of the participants come from marginalized backgrounds, many of whom have never had the opportunity to travel internationally. This inclusivity ensures that diverse perspectives are represented, enriching the dialogue and outcomes of the conference.
The conference features capacity-building initiatives through hands-on workshops and training sessions, equipping participants with essential skills to become effective leaders in their communities.
An inter-generational panel discussion includes voices from those born in 1995 and later, as well as women who attended the Beijing Conference in 1995, fostering a rich exchange of experiences and perspectives.
Reflecting on the importance of the gathering, Ms. Chinyere Chukwudebelu, AfWID steering committee member and West Africa Coordinator, noted that the dialogue provides a platform for women to voice their struggles, share their experiences, and shape solutions that will lead to a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
The AfWID gathering also commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, serving as a platform to reflect on the progress made so far and the challenges that still need to be addressed.
This landmark dialogue not only empowers women but also strengthens their collective capacity to drive positive change across Africa and beyond.
By creating a platform for building communities across diverse backgrounds, AfWID aspires to forge lasting partnerships and shared purposes to tackle the pressing challenges faced by women in the region.
